Ladysmith KZN: The pros and cons of following trends

Over the years, social media has developed from a social space to an influential arena

These days, we all want to be trendsetters, especially the youth. Over the years, social media has developed from a social space to an influential arena, and we now have individuals known as Influencers. What is meant by this word is how much impact you have in society and on your peers – from fashion, gadgets and lifestyle to the language we use to communicate. Almost everything is ‘new age’ in this era; Generation Z has taken over and is in charge.

With the above in mind, here are some pros and cons of following trends:

Advantages

Catching trends from the very beginning

You are able to know about everything that’s new and trending. You have knowledge about major trends, so you can adapt at any social gathering during conversations.

Get to try new things

As a trend follower, you’re always trying to stay abreast of the big moves in the market. Following trends doesn’t mean you have to try everything that’s new, but you can see what suits you.

Check out those tutorials

There are video tutorials on YouTube and other sites, so having a full-time job is no obstacle. Maybe once a week you can try something new.

Disadvantages

Lots of false breakouts

As a trend follower, you’re constantly trying to find and ride the trends as they occur. But some trends are not worth following, as some are not based on facts, such as beauty trends (skin treatment). You don’t want to do something that could have a negative impact on your life, all in the name of “trying new things”.

There are new trends daily

There are new trends on a daily basis and following those trends can be a waste of time. You follow one thing and tomorrow, there is a new trend. Some of them require money as well. In most cases, over time, the objects lose value. The most common example of this is clothing: You will end up buying things you don’t need… and each month, a new clothing trend is introduced.
