Ladysmith KZN: Do you like your body?

Body positivity refers to the assertion that all people deserve to have a positive body image

We have all come across the hashtag #FetchYourBody on social media, but what does it really imply? When it comes to body shape and size, it all goes according to trends these days. Before, being slim was the ‘in thing’, but now curves are to die for.

Body positivity refers to the assertion that all people deserve to have a positive body image, regardless of how society and popular culture view the ideal shape, size and appearance.

Body positivity is all about challenging societal standards and being happy with who you are, regardless of your physical appearance – challenging how society views the body, promoting the acceptance of all bodies, helping people build confidence and acceptance of their own bodies, and addressing unrealistic body standards.

Standing up alone has never been easy, but you also contribute to other people’s confidence who are facing the same issue of body positivity. Media messages play a huge role in the relationship people have with their bodies, including how they feel about food, exercise, clothing, health, identity, and self-care.

The body positivity movement, in its current form, began to emerge around 2012, initially focusing on challenging unrealistic feminine beauty standards. Body positivity is all about loving yourself and feeling confident in your body.
