NEWCASTLE KZN: Mediclinic Newcastle clarifies its Covid-19 status

There are currently 56 Covid-19 patients being treated at Mediclinic Newcastle.

56 Covid-19 patients are currently being cared for in Mediclinic Newcastle’s various specialised Covid-19 units, each according to the level of care they require.

However, Mediclinic has assured residents that all Covid-19 protocols and measures are in place, and strict infection control measures are being practiced to manage the risk and prevent transmission of the virus.

In a media statement today, Mediclinic confirmed its hospitals countrywide have capacity for patients, but said it was important to note that Covid-19 tends to stretch critical care resources.

“It is important to note that hospital bed capacity and the number of patients at a facility remains fluid and changes on a continuous basis,” states Dr Gerrit de Villiers, Group Manager for Clinical Performance with Mediclinic International. “This dynamic situation is continuously monitored across all bed types and across all hospitals, to ensure the optimal use of available resources and continuity of patient care.”

According to the statement, Mediclinic Newcastle has also implemented measures to manage any patients presenting symptoms of possible Covid-19 infection and to prevent transmission of the virus, in line with regulations from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the National Department of Health.

Residents are encouraged to seek care from healthcare specialists and not put their health at risk by delaying treatment. Mediclinic further urged residents to adhere to national guidelines on social distancing, to use masks in public and to practice good hygiene.

“Minimising transmission remains a key factor in managing the effects of the pandemic… Everyone needs to play their part in preventing further spread,” added de Villiers.
