Ladysmith KZN- Surviving Jan-Worry

Avoid those Jan-Worry blues by taking care of your finances

January is always a nightmare for everyone; it tends to be the longest month of the year in the calendar after the festive season has passed. This month has been officially dubbed as ‘Jan-Worry’ by many. This is because it comes with all sorts of stresses, especially financial stress. The following tips will help you survive the ‘Jan-Worry blues’, get back on your feet and get through the month until pay-day.

Budgeting

Always have a budget for everything you do. In doing so, you avoid overspending and unnecessary expenditures. When going shopping, make sure you are strict on the kids, because they end up wanting everything they lay their eyes on. Let them know what you can afford and cannot afford. This will avoid tantrums in front of everyone in the shopping complex. There is nothing as embarrassing as kids being rude or crying in other people’s presence, painting you as a bad parent because you cannot give them what they want.

Upfront Payments

Take charge by making notes of all upcoming payments. Make sure all your bills for January have been settled in December, like school fees, bonds and insurance. You don’t want to skip payments and have interest added on just because it’s the festive time of the year.

Borrowing and Money Handouts

Family members should also know you have a budget, so they cannot always come to you begging for money. Avoid borrowing money from the bank, as it comes with interest and this leads to even more financial troubles.

Stay At Home

To avoid all the unnecessary spending, rather stay put and find things that will keep you occupied. Instead of going out with friends or going on holiday, take turns to invite each other to your homes and have lunch or dinner. This is a much cheaper way to socialise and have fun.

Cut Down On Luxuries

This year, let your family and friends know that there is no extravagant New Year’s Eve Party. Spend your money on food, snacks and drinks, and create a warm, intimate party. Invite fewer people to gatherings to cut costs.
