Ladysmith KZN: It’s still 5km but ‘not’ officially parkrun

Anyone can take part in the event, running a 5km course of their choice or heading over to the Country Club on Saturday morning

Officially, parkrun has not started in South Africa due to Covid-19 (gatherings of not more than 500 people). Yet parkrunners have found a way to get back on track, keep fit and get rid of the lockdown blues.

‘(Not)parkrun’ is the new buzzword across the country and guess what? It’s touched down here in Ladysmith as well. Anyone can take part in the event, running a 5km course of their choice or heading over to the Country Club on Saturday mornings.

You keep your own time and can log it on your profile on the ‘(not)parkrun’ site, which of course is the parkrun site. The past few weekends saw runners and walkers making their way to the Country Club to take part in a not-so-unusual ‘(not) parkrun’.

This run is different in that it starts an hour earlier at 7am, leaving from the tennis courts and ending there as well. Runners and walkers complete their course while keeping their own time. The usual four-legged friends have also been back in action, seen trotting happily at their owners’ side.

‘(Not) parkrun’ will carry on until normal parkrun is back in the country. All those wanting to join can do so, but must remember that Covid-19 regulations must be followed. The run starts at ‘not 8am’ but 7am on Saturday mornings at the Country Club. Be there!
