Ladysmith KZN: Community gardeners get green fingers

"It will teach them to be self-sustainable and share with others"

Between December 2 and 4, the Al-Imdaad Foundation hosted students from the Nkosi Senzagakhona Garden Project in Mpumalanga Province as part of a knowledge-sharing and exchange programme facilitated by Deputy Minister for Social-Development Ms Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu.

This follows a visit by the Al-Imdaad Foundation’s Community Gardeners to the Nkosi Senzagakhona Garden in October, which was the first phase of the exchange programme. During their visit, the gardeners from Senzagakhona Garden did a ground training practical by working together with the Al-Imdaad Foundation’s community garden team.

They have also spent time in the onsite Aquaponics Greenhouse dome and have been introduced to the basics of Aquaponics and Hydroponics growing methods.

The exchange programme is the brainchild of Deputy Minister Bogopane Zulu, who has been working together with the Al-Imdaad Foundation on various projects for up to nine years. Officials from the Department of Social Development have also accompanied the students for the programme.

Earlier on, the deputy minister described the initiative as, “A joint effort between young people who get to learn different aspects practically. In this way, we can make agriculture ayoba!” said Mr. Abed Karrim of the Al-Imdaad Foundation: “The foundation is focusing on the youth, both male and female, in empowering them with the practical way of gardening. It will teach them to be self-sustainable and share with others, similar to the ‘One Home, One Garden’ initiatives.”
