Hundreds of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members, its supporters and residents who have been impacted by service delivery issues, have begun gathering at the N11 entrance to Newcastle (near the Allen Street intersection).
Chanting in support of its Commander In Chief, Julius Malema and amid heavy police and traffic official presence, supporters say they are determined to march against alleged corruption and poor service delivery in town.
“We are marching today to stop municipal corruption. We have received many complaints about rates, the terrible state of roads and water restrictions, along with tender and employment corruption,” alleged Sibusiso Sizane, Regional Chairperson of the EFF.
Sizane mentioned that supporters would march through town before handing over a memorandum at the Town Hall later today.
Vusi Khoza, Provincial Chairperson of the EFF, said members of the party and those directly impacted by issues relating to service delivery and alleged corruption were being denied their rights as residents.
Khoza added that the march is expected to begin within the next hour as they await transport and the arrival of additional supporters.
While traffic officials and the Newcastle SAPS are at the scene, residents are advised to take note of the march through town and use alternate routes where possible.
