NEWCASTLE KZN: Seven arrested for drug possession in Osizweni

The total estimated value of drugs seized during the operations is R62 000.

SAPS teams have clamped down on the drug trade in the Osizweni policing area.

Multiple suspects are in custody and large amounts of narcotics have been seized as evidence, following intelligence driven operations conducted from November 21 to 22, and again from November 23 to 24.

The first operation, which included members of the Osizweni Crime Prevention unit and took place during the day, saw teams head to a house in Section B where a suspect was found in possession of 27 parcels of heroin. The next day, the team headed to the same location where another suspect was nabbed with 30 parcels of heroin in his possession.

“The estimated value of the recovered heroin is plus-minus R2 000. The suspects were arrested and charged for possession of drugs, and both appeared in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court on November 23,” read a statement from SAPS Corporate Communications’ Lizzy Arumugam.

The second intelligence driven operation brought in the Newcastle Public Order Policing unit and members of the Provincial Task Team. At a house in Section A, team members arrested one person in possession of 64 parcels of heroin and dry loose dagga weighing 360 grams. They later recovered another 4kg of dagga in a plastic bag.

The same afternoon, the team conducted patrols on a road in Section A near KwaNobuhle Store. One more suspect was arrested and found to be in possession of 11 parcels of heroin. During another patrol near Nokukhanya Primary School, another person was arrested and 10 parcels of heroin were recovered.

Following further intelligence, the team then moved to a building in Section A where a person was arrested for being in possession of 21 pieces of ‘rock’ (crack cocaine). By nightfall, teams moved in on a house in the Cavan area. After making another arrest, the team recovered 28 parcels of dry loose dagga weighing 108g and a small amount of cash.

“The estimated value for the drugs recovered is plus-minus R60 000,” added Arumugam.

One suspect appeared in court on November 24 and the remainder appeared in court yesterday (November 25), all facing charges of the possession of narcotics.
