NEWCASTLE KZN: Arthur Zwane arrested for attempted murder of security guard

The security guard demanded he sanitise, and Zwane allegedly refused

Arthur Zwane was arrested in connection with the attempted murder of a security guard this afternoon.

Shots were fired during a confrontation with the security guard of a hardware store in nine-mile (Madadeni), which arose after Zwane, the former eMalahleni ANC regional chairperson, and one of his companions refused to comply with Covid-19 regulations and sanitise their hands at the entrance.

Thirty-nine year old Vincent Shabalala, the security guard on duty at Halfway Hardware, was rushed to Madadeni Hospital with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and thigh, while Zwane drove to MediClinic Newcastle where he was treated for an alleged head injury and discharged.

Zwane was arrested shortly after being discharged and a case of attempted murder was opened at the Osizweni police station, where Zwane and his two companions are being detained.

The 9mm pistol police believe was used to shoot the security guard, was retrieved from Zwane’s Mercedes-Benz and confiscated.

An often controversial political figure, Zwane made national news last year when he allegedly pointed a loaded firearm at CoGTA MEC, Sipho Hlomuka.

Regarding today’s incident, Zwane denies that there is any truth to the allegations of attempted murder.

He declined an opportunity to offer further explanation as to what transpired, saying, “The matter is obviously under investigation and we can’t comment at this stage.”
