NEWCASTLE KZN: As dam levels rise, Department calls for rainwater harvesting

Here are the dam levels this week.

Light showers across the province has slightly improved dam levels from last week’s 52.7% to this week’s 53.3%, according to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).

Officials from DWS are now urging residents to harvest rainwater for re-use in households.

“Rainwater harvesting is an effective way people can save water and it can also reduce flooding. We therefore urge residents to use the rainy summer season for this purpose,” said DWS spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau.

Ratau also cautioned residents to be mindful of containers used to harvest rainwater and pleaded with them to ensure open containers were not accessible to children.

“The Department is implementing bulk water projects to help bring relief to affected areas across the seven districts in the province. The projects rolled out are funded through the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG),” continued Ratau.

Phase 1 of the project includes refurbishing and upgrading aging water infrastructure, unclogging of drainage systems and the installation of new interconnecting pipes with valves chambers to restore water treatment works to an estimated peak capacity of 6 Mâ„“/d, among others.
