Ladysmith KZN: Recognition for productive partnership in the fight against crime

The partnership between the SAPS and Crime Reporting Boards has enhanced community involvement and participation in reporting criminal elements and activities

The area manager of Crime Reporting Boards, Mr Pieter van Wyk, and SAPS Acting Uthukela District Commander Brigadier Bantham recently awarded certificates of appreciation to local journalists.

This is because journalists, together with their colleagues, are instrumental in the fight against crime.

The KwaZulu-Natal Deputy Provincial Commissioner recently reported that the partnership between the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the province and Crime Reporting Boards has enhanced community involvement and participation in reporting criminal elements and activities.

There are presently five boards in the Uthukela District, located at the Spar Shopping Centre, Oval Shopping Centre and San Marco (Pick ‘n Pay) Shopping Centre in Ladysmith.

The other two are at the Shoprite Shopping Centre in Winterton and Spar Centre in Bergville. Information is collected from these boards on a regular basis, which is proving to be valuable when it comes to reporting crime.

These information boxes have helped the SAPS by enabling the community to supply information anonymously. The boards are well maintained and effective in disseminating current crime awareness.

This partnership wishes to see more boards being erected in the Uthukela District soon.
