Ladysmith KZN: Walk against GBV

The walkers took to the streets, saying ‘enough is enough’ and that acts of violence against women and children must come to an end

A 5km walk against gender-based violence (GBV) was held on Friday, November 6, in response to the tragic rape and murder of countless women and children in the country.

The event was organised by Alfred Duma Local Municipality Mayor Vincent Madlala, councillors and an anti-GBV group called ‘Act Now’. The walkers took to the streets, saying ‘enough is enough’ and that acts of violence against women and children need to come to an end. The walk started at the Town Hall and ended at the RTI offices. Public Safety and police officers monitored the event.

Cases of GBV in Ladysmith seem to be on the rise, with the recent incident of a nine-month-old baby girl being raped and dumped in a shack in the Umbulwane area. This rape happened a day after the walk.
