VRYHEID: Michaelis Challenge comes to a close and past pupil gives back

A very special and heartfelt thank you goes to Miguel Machado, one of our past pupils.

We would like to thank every single person who took the time to enter our Virtual Michaelis Challenge 2020; your support in these tough times is extremely appreciated. A very special and heartfelt thank you goes to Miguel Machado, one of our past pupils. When Miguel heard what we were doing this year, he rallied up the troops and managed to collect a generous sum to donate to our school. These donations have come from various sportsmen that Miguel has been fortunate enough to meet during his professional cricketing career, namely fellow cricketers, footballers and golfers. Miguel and his friends from the sporting world have come together from backgrounds that are quite similar to all our Michaelis learners – small-town kids with big dreams, wanting to make a career out of the sport they are so passionate about. They all want the same end goal, ie promote sports for kids, get kids involved and give them the best opportunities possible. They want children to stay fit and healthy, and to get involved instead of sitting on the sidelines. They know firsthand that sport has a way of grooming young kids into strong adults, teaching them discipline and respect, which in turn will guide them throughout their lives. This is why they decided to get involved in our challenge. They love that we are promoting sports to children and of course, Miguel was happy to give back to a school where his passion began. He is currently playing for the Potters Bar Cricket Club in the UK and is sponsored by Adidas. They play in the Hertfordshire Premier League, where they have just won back-to-back Premier League titles for the second year running, making history in the club and winning their second piece of silverware! Miguel says the club is like a family to him; they have taken good care of him and he hopes to have a long association with them. After averaging 47.15 at the end of the season, his contract has been extended until the end of 2021. In closing, Miguel had this message for our school “Michaelis Private School, stay fit and stay healthy. Remember that the sky is the limit when it comes to your dreams. Train hard and follow your passion. Just because you come from a small town does not mean you cannot achieve great things! My friends and I are sending all our best wishes and support to the kids, parents and staff of Michaelis. Stay strong; we can get through this pandemic together!” ALSO READ: Vryheid KZN: Michaelis hosts virtual evening of the arts Make sure you follow us on our social media platforms for regular updates
