Ladysmith KZN: Breast Cancer Awareness Month ends with a hike

“The main objective of this event was to promote a healthy lifestyle for cancer survivors”

58-year-old breast cancer survivor Joy Msomi was determined that Breast Cancer Awareness Month should end on a high note, so she organised a ‘Hiking for CANSA’ event to be held on October 31.

38 people took part in the hike, which started in an area called ‘ema-2000 in Tsakane and ended near the Pieters taxi rank.

“The main objective of this event was to promote a healthy lifestyle for cancer survivors,” said Joy, who is a retired nurse from St Chad’s Clinic. The 58-year-old was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2009.

“A mastectomy was done (removal of the left breast). I did not receive any chemotherapy; rather I eat a balanced diet, exercise and attend all cancer campaigns where cancer survivors give hope to each other and share stories.”

Joy says that her family has been her pillar of strength… “Ever since I was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, I have been receiving support, especially from my family, and even my former colleagues at the clinic. God has been good to me, as I have never stopped praying for better days.”

Everyone who took part in the ‘Hiking for CANSA’ event received tokens in the form of bandanas and medals.
