NEWCASTLE: Despite rainfall, dam levels in KZN continue to diminish

Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam has recorded a slight increase in water level.

Residents have been cautioned to use water sparingly as dam levels in the province continue to dwindle.

This is according to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), which has logged a continuous decline in KwaZulu-Natal’s dam levels – from last week’s 51.7% to 51.6% this week.

“The province experienced scattered rainfall over the weekend and this was expected to bring an end to continuous decrease of dam levels. A total of six dams seem to have benefitted from the rain; nevertheless this did not influence the outlook of the province as a whole,” commented Tshikulumela Fhatuwani of the DWS.

The dams which have recorded an increase include Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam, which has increased slightly from 63.1% to 65.3% over the past week.

Others dam which have increased are:

Nagle dam on the Mngeni River increased from 69.6% to 75.8%

Spioenkop, which receives its water from Tugela River, increased from 79.4% to 79.8%

Mearns increased from 50.4% to 59.5%

Wagensdrift increased from 78.1% to 80.9%

Klipfontein increased from 42.6% to 52.2%

Woodstock increased from 74.3% to 74.7%.

“DWS is warning residents to avoid any excitement [about] recent rains and lower their guard in as far as using water is concerned,” cautioned Fhatuwani, who added it was still imperative to save water.

Dams which have recorded a decline in water levels include:

Inanda Dam, dropped from 76.5% to 76.3%

Albert-Falls is critically low, decreasing from 29.2. % last week to 28.1%

Zaaihoek Dam has also experienced a decline from 56.6% last week to 53.3% in the current week

Hazelmere Dam has dropped from 38.5% last week to 37.9% this week

Spring Grove has dipped from 35.3% to 34.7%

Craigie Burn and Hluhluwe dams have also recorded slight declines from last week’s 63.4% and 67.9% to this week’s 62.2% and 67.2%

Pongolapoort and Goedertrouw are unchanged at 39.6% and 51.1% respectively.
