GLENCOE: Elderly man found dead in home

"Please keep an eye on your neighbours if they are elderly and live alone"

The discovery of the body of an elderly man in a Glencoe home late yesterday afternoon has prompted a call for neighbours to keep a check on those who live alone.

Andre Vorster, a municipal electrician, was called by neighours who said they were worried that he had not seen Willie Venter, who lived alone, for some weeks.

His dogs were also running around the neighbourhood. “I immediately drove to the house on Transmission Lane which is near our sub station. I got to know Oom Willie  when I went to do  maintenance at the sub station,” said Andre.

When he got to the house he looked through the window immediately became aware of a strong smell. “I knew something was wrong and called the SAPS.” When the SAPS arrived, Andre realised that the door was not even locked.

“We went in and to our shock found Oom Willie lying on the floor of the bedroom. He would have been dead for some days already and there was no sign of any struggle.” Andre said they traced Mr Venter’s daughter via contacts in Australia. “She is on her way (to Glencoe).”

Andre said it was a very tragic incident. “With the Covid-19 situation forcing many elderly people to stay at home I think it would be a good idea if neighbours can just keep a regular check on them to ensure they are still safe and healthy.”
