NEWCASTLE: ACT NOW urges GBVF victims to break the silence on abuse (VIDEO)

Municipal officials and local men joined the cause and stood up against gender-based violence and femicide.

It has been called the ‘second pandemic’ sweeping across South Africa.

Now a group of activists – predominantly men – are standing up against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) by sending a strong message to abusers, in an attempt to stop violence perpetrated against women, children and the elderly.

Newcastle Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba signs the flag which will be taken to Durban.

Called ‘ACT NOW’, the group is currently walking from Gauteng to KwaZulu-Natal (Durban) and stopped in Newcastle along the way. The next leg of their journey today is a long route to Ladysmith.

This morning, the group was were joined by Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba, who was made an honorary member of the organisation and pledged to join the walk for 5km.

Newcastle Municipality’s Vish Govender and Laurence Short support the initiative.
