Ladysmith KZN: Cop killer gets over a decade behind bars

A ‘cop killer’ was sentenced 12 years’ imprisonment by the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on September 28.

The suspect was accused of stabbing a police officer to death.

The murder victim was Sergeant Philani Dlamini, who was stationed at the Ladysmith Vispol Unit. The deadly crime took place at Kwa Somtshikazi Butchery in Steadville.

It is alleged that the late Sergeant Dlamini was there when a fight broke out. He tried to intervene and stop the fight and was stabbed in the chest in the process.

Sergeant Dlamini passed away due to the injuries he sustained.

The convicted killer is 25-year-old Wonder Ndlangisa. In addition to jail time, Ndlangisa was also found unfit to possess a firearm.

Brigadier Francis Bantham thanked the officials who were handling the case, as well as the magistrate (D Francke) and prosecutor (Mrs Singh). “I also thank one of our own, Detective Sergeant DF Warmenhoven, who is tasked with investigating serious and violent crimes at Ladysmith SAPS, for his efforts in making sure that all the necessary and important evidence that is required in court is available. I take this opportunity to thank all the people who were involved in this case for making sure that criminals are found guilty and receive hefty sentences,” said Brigadier Bantham.
