“It was a great day!” exclaimed Deborah Gamede, Riverdale Primary School educator and Guider, when speaking about a lesson on World Food Day.

To make the day exciting for the Girl Guides and Brownies, Mrs Gamede brought fruit and a blender, and showed the learners how fruit is processed into juice.

“We talked about the importance of a balanced and healthy diet, emphasising the importance of fruits in our bodies. I allowed them to be hands-on with washing, peeling and cutting the fruit, and placing it into the blender jug to blend it,” she explained.

The young learners had also never seen a pineapple tree before, so Mrs Gamede used the Internet to show them. She also taught them how to plant a pineapple, using the crown.

“I was able to teach skills development to them by showing them fruits being processed into juice, as well as planting a pineapple plant, while celebrating World Food Day,” added Mrs Gamede.
