NEWCASTLE: Municipality clears up false rumours of ‘free land sites’

The Newcastle Municipality has refuted claims that it is accepting registrations for free land sites/stands.

An urgent notice has been issued by the Newcastle Municipality in which it states that rumours surrounding the registration of ‘free land sites (stands)’ at the municipal offices, is false.

“We have been aware of serious rumours about this and state categorically that this is false,” said Head of Communications for Newcastle Municipality, Mlungisi Khumalo. “There is no program to register for free land sites/stands. The municipality is also aware of increasing queues outside the building, mostly from members of the public who claim they have come to register for free land sites.”

Khumalo warned the public to be vigilant and cautious before parting with their money.

“We know there are criminals who have deceived people into buying privately owned sites/stands – these dishonest individuals continue to defraud unsuspecting members of the community and claim to be working for the municipality.”

Khumalo concluded by saying these criminals who dupe people of their hard earned cash are heartless and merciless.

“We urge residents to be very careful. It concerns us that these thieves rob the gogo and umkhulu, and promise them land which either does not exist or is already owned by someone else.”
