GLENCOE – Staff forcibly removed from municipal offices

Offices closed as group demand answers from Municipality over ''jobs for pals"

Service delivery came to a standstill in Glencoe today as the municipal offices were closed and staff  removed from the building.

A group made their way to this offices this morning, locking the doors after removing staff. Their frustration over ‘jobs for pals’ hiring’s at the Endumeni Municipality was the reason for the action.  It was said that a manager had been hired from Durban but that this could not be verified,

Police responded to the scene to ensure order was kept and the Mayor, Sduduzo Mdluli, also addressed the crowd later in the day.

The Mayor will issue a statement later.

IFP Councillor, Callie Carelse who is based in Glencoe, said he did  not approve of any action that could be deemed illegal but fully agreed that the hiring of staff at Endumeni Municipality ‘is out of control’ with the salary bill soaking up over 40% of the budget.

“Service delivery has come to a standstill because they are not hiring on the ground workmen. They are hiring managers who want offices, secretaries and cars. Yet the roads in Glencoe and Dundee are terrible. In fact, in the Avon Industrial Area the poorly maintained tar roads have now been reduced to gravel roads as the Municipality removed the black top.”

He said he and his party were tired of hearing the excuse that ‘Covid is stopping service delivery’.

“That excuse is worn out. But its not stopping them from hiring people needlessly. We have more managers than 10 years ago but less work is being done.”
