DUNDEE: Langelihle hopes his Italian rugby dream becomes a reality

Langelihle, who was raised by a single mum along with two siblings, says his greatest wish is to 'make mum proud'.

Young, polite and determined to achieve on the rugby field… That’s an accurate description of 17-year-old Langelihle Mthombeni.

This Dundee High School (DHS) matric student is eagerly raising funds to help pay for a rugby tour to Italy in January, after he was chosen as part of a specialised rugby team that will compete against several international teams while touring Italy

. Langelihle says he was encouraged to ‘get into’ rugby by DHS coach Barrie Smith. “He said, boy, you look like a flanker. And so it was. And I just love playing rugby.”

He captains the DHS rugby team and made such an impression on Sharks rugby scouts at the Sarel Cilliers Rugby Day that for two years in a row he was judged ‘man of the match’.

His energetic, passionate play also saw him selected by the Sharks panel to join their academy in Durban. “I am also proud that I have played for Northern KZN and was awarded ‘junior of the year’ in 2019 at DHS.” Langelihle, who was raised by a single mum along with two siblings, says his greatest wish is to ‘make mum proud’.

“If I can raise R40,000 to pay for my trip to Italy to join the rest of the team selected, I will be realising part of my dream. The tour is being organised by Travel & Sport and is very professionally done.” He has the backing of Councillor Thulani Mahaye, himself an educator. “We can only be proud of Langelihle, who has fought against the odds to reach this milestone.

Our wish is that Courier readers will find it in their hearts to support him financially to make the trip to Italy a reality. Other youngsters can certainly learn from him that manners, attitude, hard work and passion can put you on the road to success, whatever it is you wish to do.”

Anyone able to assist Langelihle is asked to contact him on 062-152-6453.
