NEWCASTLE: Pedestrian struck by vehicle at Allen/Drakensberg intersection

The force of impact appears to have killed the pedestrian instantly.

An elderly man was knocked over this morning at the intersection of Allen Street and Drakensberg Drive, and succumbed to his injuries on the scene.

Witnesses alleged the man was heading across the road when he was struck by a vehicle. Danie Bothma, who gave a statement to police, was in the area when it happened.

“I saw the entire thing happen. I know the old man, he was 67 years old and lived at the shelter at the Old Monte Vista Casino. The car hit him and I saw him fly into the air.”

Bothma said the incident has left him severely traumatised.

“I’m still in shock,” he trembled. “I think all his bones are broken and about 100 metres away from the body, there was another piece I think was his leg.”

Lizzy Arumugam of Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications confirmed an official statement would be sent to the Newcastle Advertiser once it has been received.

Our condolences to family and friends of the deceased.
