ESTCOURT: Stepping in to provide schools with safe sanitation

Gratitude abounded last Monday when two schools were provided with a long-awaited ‘basic need’ – proper sanitation.
This was thanks to a partnership between Gift of the Givers Estcourt and Jamiatul Ulama South Africa.

The schools – Singayo Imfundo Primary School in the Injisuthi area and Bonokuhle High School in Loskop – were identified after a survey of the existing toilets, which were said to be unsafe.

At Singayo Imfundo Primary School, five new toilets were officially handed over amid jubilation from the principal, staff and learners.

Also present at the handover were officials from the Education Department, uThukela District Municipality and the sponsor, Jamiatul Ulama South Africa.

“The principal was overwhelmed and at a loss for words to express her gratitude for the new toilets. Being a primary school, the educators previously always had to accompany the learners to the toilet, as they were unsafe. Now that the new toilets are equipped with a seat for smaller children, there is no need to do this anymore,” said Gift of the Givers Estcourt community liaison Jaaved Khan.

275 detergent, hygiene and sweet packs were given to all the learners. The next stop was Bonokuhle High School.

“The pits of the existing toilets were full and the educators had tried to build a new block through the School Governing Body (SGB), but could not complete them. The toilets were also unsafe,” explained Mr Khan.

10 new toilets were installed at the school, which were gratefully received by the principal and learners, who thanked the sponsors for a ‘generous gift’.

Before leaving, the team handed out 300 hygiene, detergent and sweet packs to the learners.
