ESTCOURT: Sewage spill lingers on at golf club

"Tons of raw sewage is flowing into this water source and uThukela doesn't respond"

It’s been three weeks since Estcourt Golf Club president George van Niekerk made a public plea to uThukela District Municipality to stop the sewage that is flowing through a residential area, the golf club and into the Bushmans River.

What has since been established by the district municipality is that a damaged mainline and blocked sewer chambers have been spilling effluent into three dams at the golf club.

uThukela District Municipality has previously, via the Estcourt News, resolved to repair the damage and said that maintenance teams were awaiting material.

“That is just an excuse! They haven’t done anything. It is still the same,” said Mr van Niekerk recently.

He added that golf club members were seeking to “take it further”.

“We want to get a health inspector in here. Our biggest concern is for the people who live along the Bushmans River. They use the water for washing and swimming, and it is contaminated. Tons of raw sewage is flowing into this water source and uThukela doesn’t respond,” said Mr van Niekerk.

District municipality communication manager Jabulani Mkhonza said the main reason why the sewage spill had not been attended to was because the technical services department has not received the material required to carry out the job.

“Our area engineer has been keeping track of the progress and he confirmed that he made a follow-up with the Supply Chain Management section, enquiring about the material requested in that regard. There have been some delays encountered during the process of purchasing the material. We can, however, mention that the delivery of material is expected soon and also commit that the sewer line at the golf course will be fixed by next week. We apologise for the unforeseen delays experienced,” commented Mr Mkhonza.
