"We can't live with this filth"

When Cornerstone Church congregants go to their place of worship, they are dismayed to find that hordes of waste is continuously and illegally being dumped in front of the church entrance.

Ranging from domestic refuse to building rubble, the growing mess is metres away from the church door and is causing a stink among church-goers.

“We are tired of telling people to stop dumping their dirt here. It is people from around the area; we have seen them and approached them, but it’s never stopped,” said church secretary Victor Baboolall.

The church is situated in a cul-de-sac in Canna Avenue, Forderville, and the quiet road makes it ideal for illegal dumping.

The dumping is not a new problem and Mr Baboolall says the church exhausted several other options before turning to the media to publicise their concerns.

“We have personally spoken to the people we’ve found dumping. We’ve also contacted the ward councillor, as well as Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality. As you can see, nothing has changed,” he added.

Mr Baboolall says that a sign forbidding illegal dumping was erected, but didn’t last a week before it was removed and the dumping continued unabated.

He also can’t fathom why domestic waste is finding its way to the area, saying that weekly refuse removal is available to residents in the area.

“We can’t live with this filth. We don’t know what is dumped and we could be at risk of contracting Covid-19. When we have visitors, what must they think of our church?” questioned an angry Mr Baboolall.

The congregation is making an earnest appeal to the people responsible for the increasing and recurring illegal dumping.

“Please stop dumping here. This is a church. How would you feel if someone dumped waste at your place of worship?” said Mr Baboolall.
