NEWCASTLE: Watch as officials prepare for festive rush during Transport Month

Officials set up a roadblock with the intention of educating motorists, instead of simply fining them.

“People must know that law enforcement is still there and no person is exempted from the law.”

After a brief explanation, Chief Traffic Officer, Ashok Anandhaw welcomed fellow traffic officials, emergency services, councillors, driving schools, portfolio councillors, taxi associations, SAPS and tour operators to the launch of Transport Month, near the intersection of Allen Street and the N11 this morning.

With weeks counting down to the festive season, officials set up a roadblock with the intention of educating motorists, instead of simply fining them.

Newcastle Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba said, “We want to emphasise that it’s not about just giving a fine; educating a person goes a long way.”

Officials handed out information pamphlets to motorists and encouraged them to wear masks (especially in taxis and buses), while traffic officials checked for expired licences and vehicle faults.
