In his welcome speech, Mayor Mazibuko said that even though the country has moved to level one of the lockdown, the fight against the pandemic is not over, so we have to maintain social distancing and other necessary precautions all the time.

“As we settle into the new normal, we must continue to exercise every possible precaution to avoid infections and keep ourselves safe, and also keep our economy open. Let’s work together to rebuild our economy,” said the mayor.

MEC Dube-Ncube said they need to do better for the people by bringing service delivery, reconstruction plans and job opportunities, as tourism development was badly affected by the pandemic.

“Many people lost their income during this trying period. Digital economy is very important to create job opportunities,” said MEC Dube-Ncube.

Dr Phaahla said the nation mourns those who have passed away due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said uThukela District performed very well, as many people have recovered.

He went on to say that this pandemic has put a strain on the Department of Health and passed his gratitude to all front-line workers.

After the meeting, there was an official opening of the digital centre established by the Moses Kotane Institute of Technology, as well as a handover of social relief packages to needy families as part of ensuring food security.

There was a walkabout at the Royal Natal Park and a wine-tasting session at Cathedral Peak.
