DUNDEE: Armed robbery spate re-opens security cameras debate

What is your opinion? Will CCTV cameras help stem the crime surge?

A spate of armed robberies in Dundee and Glencoe over the past nine days has re-opened the age-old debate of putting up security cameras to cover the CBDs of Dundee and Glencoe.

Armed gangs have in the past week robbed Glencoe Spar, Arrows Supermarket in Glencoe, NDE Motors in Dundee and on Saturday morning, three men held up a cash loan shop on Victoria Street but made off only with a cellphone.

There has also been a spike in burglaries with the Glencoe Pep Stores the latest victim on Saturday night.

In all cases the perpetrators managed to evade arrest despite gallant attempts by security group volunteers to launch manhunts.

The idea of putting of CCTV cameras in Endumeni was first mooted in around 1996.

“Despite constants promises by various Councils nothing has happened? Why? Surely these manned cameras will serve as a deterrent?” asked FC Bester, Endumeni Residents’ Association.

However, some who serve on various emergency Whats App groups were more sceptical saying ‘the project would only work if the SAPs buy in otherwise the cameras would just become ornaments’. What is your opinion? Will CCTV cameras help stem the crime surge?
