Protest organisers have warned that there will be a total shutdown of Bergville on Monday. Okhahlamba Local Municipality issued a statement that it is aware of a number of notices and voice notes that have been circulated about strike action planned for Monday, October 12, 2020, in Bergville.
According to them, the strike action is illegal. “As a municipality, we respect the rights of our citizens to protest as a means of expressing their dissatisfaction, provided all the relevant protocols have been adhered to,” says Okhahlamba Local Municipality spokesperson Suraya Asmal.
“The municipality has received correspondence from taxi associations who have distanced themselves from the protest. Taxis will be operating as they normally do. There will be no free taxi fare for people.” The Okhahlamba Business Forum and businesses in Bergville have indicated that they will be operating as normal, and according to the municipality “have also distanced themselves from the protest.”
“We are very much aware of the plans, which are to get us arrested or to have me as chairperson of Ubumbano Lokuthula and Nkosinathi Mthethwa of the NPA assassinated,” says Dr Andile Hlatshwayo, chairperson of Ubumbano Lokuthula.
“We still invite all community members to partake in this protest,” he added.
