Ladysmith: I don’t have time for political drama – says ANC councillor

Councillor Nkephu met with the angry protesters and promised them that he will restart the hiring process and follow all the proper protocols when hiring

Ladysmith KZN – On September 23, angry Matiwaneskop residents took to the streets to voice their grievances, as they are accusing their area councillor of nepotism.

“There is a project up and running in our community to install electricity meters, but as the community members of Matiwaneskop, we were never consulted with regards to it, as we do not know how the people working there got hired. Thus the councillor took his own people and gave them jobs, as he never followed proper protocols,” said the unhappy Matiwaneskop residents.

The angry mob continued by stating that what makes them even more angry is that ‘a certain house’ in the area is being used as a site for the construction… “How does someone else’s house get used as a site for a community project? I mean, we have a hall in Matiwane.”

A Ladysmith Gazette reporter conducted an exclusive interview with Cllr Nkephu, who said he does not have time to entertain drama and also that an IFP councillor organised for the Matiwaneskop residents to protest.

“An IFP councillor residing in this area is perpetrating violence in the community and we must remember that we are approaching the 2021 elections, thus they want me out. This councillor is trying to ruin my name and I will not entertain him, as I do not have time to play around; I am working. The only reason I requested ward committees around the area to select people to work for the electricity project is because we are faced with the Covid-19 pandemic and I was not able to call the community into a meeting, as that is against the coronavirus regulations.”
