NEWCASTLE: National COSATU strike not expected to disrupt local commuters

The chairperson of the Amajuba Regional Taxi Council has said no strike action has been planned in this area yet.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has planned a National Industrial Strike/Stay away on October 7.

In a memo widely circulated, representatives said the strike is about ‘socio-economic issues which have further deepened the crisis of inequality, poverty and unemployment’.

The memo mentioned the strike would take various forms across the province, which included motorcades, pickets and marches which they claimed would cause ‘inconvenience’.

“We therefore would like to caution employers, commuters and everyone else to consider October 7 as a nation-wide strike/stayaway to avoid inconvenience. COSATU will not be held responsible for any inconvenience that individuals will experience on the said day,” cautioned the memo.

Dumisani Ntuli, Chairperson of the Amajuba Rgional Taxi Council (an affiliate to SANTACO) confirmed that while strike action is planned across the province, he expects nothing to happen in Newcastle.

“We are not anticipating anything unless otherwise given a direction,” clarified Ntuli.

“For now we haven’t been contacted or notified about a strike in the Amajuba District. However, this can change at any moment. Currently our modes of transport will be operating,” he concluded.
