Vryheid KZN: All hands on deck for clean-ups

"We are doing this to keep our area clean and also protect our children" - Buthelezi.

The trend of community members taking the initiative and cleaning their own areas is slowly gaining momentum, and Lakeside is no different in this respect.
The Lakeside community has decided to clean their area on a continuous basis to maintain a healthy and clean environment.

“We are doing this to keep our area clean and also protect our children. I find people dumping illegally in areas where children have easy access. People throw away expired medication, used condoms and other unhealthy things, including dead animals. It is very sad to find a child playing with used condoms. So we are doing this mostly to protect our children, but also so we can live in a healthy environment because we really do not like filth,” said Velaphi Buthelezi.
The clean-up is also to remind people that illegal dumping is hazardous to everyone, especially during this time of Covid-19 when people want to breathe cleaner, fresher air.

A recent clean-up in Lakeside.
