NEWCASTLE: Drowned man’s body recovered at Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam

After an extensive surface search, the drowning victim's body was recovered.

The Newcastle K9 Unit and Pietermaritzburg Search and Rescue were called in yesterday (October 3), to help recover the body of a drowning victim at the Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam.

Police sources say the 19-year-old victim, who was camping with family and friends, went into the water for a swim and encountered difficulty, before slipping beneath the surface of the water and vanishing from sight.

“The exact area where he drowned could not be pointed out. A surface search was done and a dive operation was conducted. The body of the man was recovered,” said Lizzy Arumugam, from the SAPS Newcastle Corporate Communications office.

An inquest docket has since been opened into the tragic incident, and investigations are currently underway.
