Ladysmith: Stylish celebration of heritage in our town

Thousands of people across the country took part in this phenomenon; right here in Ladysmith as well

Ladysmith KZN: Heritage Day was commemorated on Thursday, September 24, with President Cyril Ramaphosa coming up with a great idea regarding how everyone should celebrate this occasion in 2020.

To chase away those ‘lockdown blues’, the president urged everyone to use the public holiday as “family time”, to reflect on the difficult journey we have all travelled, to remember those who have lost their lives, and to quietly rejoice in the remarkable and diverse heritage of our nation that is well-known all over the world.

On a less ‘quiet note’ though, President Ramaphosa said there could be no better celebration of our ‘South African-ness’ than joining the global phenomenon that is the Jerusalema Dance Challenge.

Thousands of people across the country took part in this phenomenon; right here in Ladysmith too.

Female officers from the SAPS, Public Safety, Department of Education, Department of Justice and Correctional Services held a Heritage Day lunch at a hotel in town, where they got to relax and also do the Jerusalema dance. Pick ‘n Pay staff also kicked off their working shoes and had fun doing the Jerusalema dance in the San Marco Centre on Heritage Day.

Many families and businesses also took part in the challenge, and shared their dance experiences on social media. This was indeed a Heritage Day for the history books in South Africa, with everyone rocking to the ‘dance of hope’, as it has been dubbed.
