Ladysmith: Black Duck plans to clean up Cochrane Spruit

Ladysmith has the potential for tremendous bird and plant life, and cleaning up the river will encourage the return of many species

Ladysmith KZN – Observant residents will have noticed new signs that have been erected at the “StinkSpruit” bridges. These signs give the actual name of the river, Cochrane Spruit, and have been erected by the African Black Duck Working Group.

This group, made up of residents of Ladysmith, is working with responsible officials to get the river back to a sound ecological condition. They are addressing water quality issues, the uncontrolled littering and dumping that is taking place, the control of alien vegetation, and security issues along the proposed green strip.

Ladysmith has the potential for tremendous bird and plant life, and cleaning up the river will encourage the return of many species to our town.

We do, however, need clean, flowing water to attract these species, and turn the river into an attraction for both visitors and residents. The clean water will also be an asset to the community, leading to an improvement in environmental conditions for users of the river and residents of the town. The group is working on a number of strategies to improve the river, and get it back to a sustainable condition.
