Ladysmith: 81-year-old speaks out after vicious attack

"I thank God I am still alive"

Ladysmith KZN – “God saved my life, else I would have died,” says 81-year old Thokozile Hadebe from Fitty Park in the Umhlumayo area after being brutally beaten up by an unknown man who attacked her and left her for dead in her home.

A Ladysmith Gazette journalist conducted an interview with the octogenarian, who can’t stop thanking God for sparing her life… “It was on September 14, late at night, when I heard the dogs barking loudly. I woke up and went to the door to see what was going on. That’s when a person pushed their way into the house. As old people, we sleep with wood to make fire in the morning. Well, the man who barged into my house took that wood and started beating me up with it. The pieces of wood were breaking as he mercilessly pummeled my arms and body. How can a young man do such a thing to an old lady like me?” asked Thokozile.

The traumatized 81-year old explained that she eventually fell to the floor under the force of the raining blows and then her attacker proceeded to rob her of her belongings. “This cruel man took a bag that had my Identity Document (ID), my money and my phones. I was left  with nothing but two broken arms and a body full of bruises; I can barely walk.”

A councillor in the Umhlumayo area, Cllr Majola, said they are doing everything in their power to help the Hadebe family after what happened.

“We are grateful to the Al-Imdaad Foundation, as they donated food parcels to this family.

“Working jointly with the Umhlumayo Ward Committees, we will make sure the culprit is brought to book,” added Cllr Majola.
