ESTCOURT: Demand for housing goes to the street

A group of residents blocked off the R103 between Colenso and Frere, demanding that officials from the Housing Department hear their pleas for proper housing

Since 2013, some residents in Cornfields have been patiently waiting to be homeowners.

Four implementing agents were appointing and the first stage of the housing project was complete.

The second phase, which involved the actual construction phase, has been put on hold since December last year.

This morning (September 29), the residents’ patience ran out and they took to the street to vent their frustrations.

A group of residents blocked off the R103 between Colenso and Frere, demanding that officials from the Housing Department hear their pleas for proper housing.

Ward Councillor Nyanda Mchunu said that residents were “sick and tired” of waiting for homes.

“There is a budget, there are plans but the department is delaying the project. Last year, the residents were told the construction will begin in December. Then they were told it would begin in February and then there was further delay because of Covid-19. The department is delaying the project and people are sick and tired,” said Cllr Mchunu.
