Pomeroy/Msinga road blocked again as protesters vent against lack of water, corruption

The SA Human Rights Council has also been contacted, the memorandum said

The R33, between Pomeroy and Msinga, is closed this morning.

Protesters have spread burning tyres, rocks and other obstacles on the route after they say their requests for the provision of water in the area had been ignored.

In a memorandum to MEC of Local Government, Cogta, Hlomuka, the protesters said they had been waiting for four years for water to be supplied to various areas.

The memorandum went on to say: *Cogta KZN and South African Human Rights Commission move at a snail-pace in attending to the community’s water plight.

* Accuations that the employment of 50 Department of Health Employees connected to an Umzinyathi District Municipality Councillor

* Allegations that R900 000 of Covid relief funds splashed on a few sanitizers and renovation of two halls which were to be funded from the operational budget.

“The MEC for Cogta should intervene and report back to the community within seven days, failure which, this memorandum hereby serves as a notice that the the community will shutdown all operations and movements in and out of Msinga on Sep 25, 2020 and as an ongoing protest on every 15th and 25th of the months to follow, until attended to.”

It was also alleged that a Councillor had used public money to fill up water tanks at his private home. The memorandum called on District Mayor, Ngubane, to vacate his office until the issues are resolved, The Umzinyathi District Council has been contacted for comment and this will be published once it has bee received
