Vryheid KZN: Michaelis hosts virtual evening of the arts

Our Grade 7 class worked on a particularly exciting project, where they added augmented reality to their art pieces

The resilient learners and staff of Michaelis Private School were not going to let Covid-19 put a damper on their annual ‘Evening of the Arts’. The evening still took place on its scheduled date of August 19, as planned. Instead of the hall being adorned with all the beautiful and bright pieces of art, this year our parents and learners viewed the pieces on screens in the comfort of their own homes. The evening began with a welcome from the principal, Mrs Gaskell, followed by a compilation of art and our learners’ views and feelings on the subject. Thereafter, The Art Store was officially opened on our website and parents could purchase the pieces online. Our Grade 7 class worked on a particularly exciting project, where they added augmented reality to their art pieces. A GIF was created using their iPad. An app was used to add the GIF to the JPEG of their artwork and a QR code created. Once this QR code is scanned and the iPad is held in front of the artwork, it comes to life with all sorts of animated objects moving across their canvasses. The tech world has opened many new and exciting doors, and enabled our learners to express themselves in yet another creative way; this has been a thrilling journey and surely a first for Vryheid! Although this is not how we had originally planned this evening, the parents were grateful to still be a part of it and see all the amazing pieces. Congratulations to our learners on their stunning and inspirational artwork!
