DUNDEE: Job seekers urged not to ‘pay for work’

"We would like to caution citizens to always be vigilant of people demanding money for employment."

SAPS have warned against job seekers falling for conmen who offer employment in exchange for money.

The warning comes after police arrested a 58-year-old man at KwaNdengezi and he will appear in court soon for fraud committed in Pietermaritzburg early this year.

It is alleged that the suspect would phone his victims and offer them jobs at a hospital. He told his victims that he was employed as a human resources manager and has the means to get them employment if they deposited a required amount of cash into his account.

The victims then deposited the required cash and the suspect vanished with the money. The matter was reported to police and a case of fraud was opened.

“We would like to caution citizens to always be vigilant of people demanding money for employment. Those that are aware of employment scams or illegal employment activities, should immediately report such to the police,” said Captain Nqobile Gwala.

Previously, in the Dundee area conmen advertised jobs at locals mines and at Correctional Services which turned out to be false. Money was passed on by those desperate for work.
