Ladysmith: Biker rescued after careening off mountain in Drakensberg

The team of rescuers set out on a hiking trail, climbing the mountain using the GPS co-ordinates given

LADYSMITH KZN: Netcare 911 responded at about 11.40am on Saturday, August 30, to reports of a fall in a remote location of the Okhahlamba mountain range.

A motorcyclist had lost control and crashed down a mountainside.

A Netcare 911 emergency care practitioner, the Okhahlamba Protection Services, rangers from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, as well as off-road motorcyclists met at the furthest point accessible by vehicle.

The team then set out on a hiking trail, climbing the mountain using the GPS co-ordinates given. Reports from the scene indicate that an off-road motorcyclist lost control while negotiating rocky terrain, resulting in the patient falling some distance down a steep mountainside.

The patient, a 57-year-old man, was located late afternoon in an area not accessible by conventional means.

The man had sustained serious injuries and was stabilised at the scene using advanced life support procedures.

Due to the seriousness of his injuries, a Netcare 911 helicopter ambulance was activated to provide rapid transportation to a specialist facility.
