ESTCOURT: Bikers rev up the fight against farm attacks

Farmers and business owners from the central Drakensberg were also part of this national protest

In a show of solidarity against farm attacks and murders, bikers from across the country held a protest ride last Saturday.

Farmers and business owners from the central Drakensberg were also part of this national protest.

Richard Lemmer (a farmer in the area) and his son, Hansie. A friend of Richard’s was murdered near Hillcrest on August 27.

A group of riders assembled at 9am on the R600 and rode via Winterton and Bergville to the top of Oliviershoek Pass before returning to The Nest Hotel. Stuart Longmore organised the local ride.

Nationally, thousands of bikers converged on the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where crosses and roses were laid at the gate. It is reported that more than 10,000 bikers joined this countrywide protest, which was organised by the Stop Farm Murders movement, along with various other organisations.

In certain areas, the bikers also spread awareness about gender-based violence.
