NEWCASTLE ADVERTISER: Mayor to plant trees as a symbol of peace and unity

The Mayor says the trees are meant to honour Glen and Vida Rafferty, and those who have succumbed to Covid-19.

As a symbol of social cohesion, and in solidarity with calls to end farm killings and the abuse of farm workers, Mayor of Newcastle, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba will plant three trees today (September 5).

These trees will also be planted in honour of the late Glen and Vida Rafferty and those who have succumbed to Covid-19. Dr Mahlaba will be joined at the tree-planting by representatives of the farming and business communities, and Speaker of Council, Samukelisiwe Yende.

“I hope these trees will forever be a symbolic monument for peace, unity and social cohesion among our residents of Newcastle. The trees are also a symbol of our commitment in uniting against social ills in communities and ending ‘unprovoked and senseless killings’ in Newcastle,” explained Dr Mahlaba in a press statement, issued by the municipal Communications Unit.
