NEWCASTLE ADVERTISER: Two injured in Osizweni shooting

Allegations are rife the shooting may be linked to renewed taxi violence in the Amajuba District region.

Two people were injured in a shootout in Osizweni yesterday and were rushed to Madadeni Provincial Hospital.

One person was shot in his left armpit and the other, in his right leg, revealed Captain Sipho Nkosi, Communications Officer at the Osizweni Police Station.

Capt Nkosi said that a man, who disembarked from a taxi in Osizweni near Vulindlela Primary School, was accosted by armed gunmen driving a green BMW vehicle.

They demanded his belongings, then opened fire and sped off. Allegations are rife the shooting may be linked to renewed taxi violence in the Amajuba District region, but Captain Nkosi refutes this.

“Currently, it doesn’t look like the incident was associated with taxi violence. It seems like it was a robbery because the suspects demanded cell phones and money before shooting at the victim,” said Nkosi.

Captain Nkosi further revealed the vehicle in which the suspects were travelling, was later found abandoned in Osizweni. Two suspects have since been arrested.

“The two suspects are due to appear in Madadeni Magistrate Court for attempted murder, either today or tomorrow. Our investigations into this case are on-going,” he said.
