Gun owners to take note of new firearm amnesty period

You have until the end of January next year to hand in your firearms

A new firearm amnesty has been approved by Parliament. The firearm amnesty is valid for six months, beginning on August 1 and ending on January 31, 2021.

According to Colonel Brenda Muridili, the previous firearm amnesty, which was also intended for a period of six months, was disrupted by the unexpected Covid-19 pandemic.

However, despite that, the SAPS received 46,714 firearms.

“Minister of Police General Bheki Cele approached Parliament to approve a new six-month amnesty period. The approval of the new application was published in the Government Gazette on July 31, which allows everyone with illegal or unwanted firearms to hand them over at their nearest police station.

Colonel Muridili urges people to take advantage of this period to hand in their illegal firearms and ammunition for destruction, or for renewal of a competency certificate and a valid licence.
