1 dead, 2 injured after shooting in Helpmekaar Road, Ladysmith

The driver of the taxi was shot in the arm and a passenger was shot in the leg, both surviving the ordeal

One person was shot dead in the early hours of Thursday morning (August 20) after the occupants of a bakkie opened fire on a taxi in Helpmekaar Road.

According to Ladysmith police spokesperson Captain Bongani ‘Skhindi’ Nyathi, the shooting took place near the St Chad’s Mission at about 4.30am.

It is alleged that a taxi transporting three passengers was travelling towards Ezakheni from Ladysmith and encountered a bakkie at the speed humps. The bakkie was carrying a cow on the back.

When the taxi got closer to the other vehicle, the occupants of the bakkie got out and opened fire without saying a word.

Three occupants in the taxi were shot and injured, including the driver.

One of the injured later passed away in hospital.

Ezakheni police were summoned after the shooting and officers picked up five spent AK-47 cartridges at the scene.

Police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.
