SAPS Newcastle – how to guard yourself against petty crime

Police officials advise residents to wear appropriate shoes, in case they need to run away.

Housebreaking, robberies and petty crime are all said to be on the increase. Local law enforcers elaborate on the recorded crime spikes in this week’s edition of the Newcastle Advertiser.

SAPS Newcastle’s Communication Department has also submitted practical suggestions for residents to follow, to ensure their personal safety and security against common robbery (such as pickpocketing and mugging).

Police officials advise the following:

  •  Never walk alone – stay in groups with co-workers, friends or family as there is strength in numbers
  • Convey a sense of confidence when on foot – do not present yourself as timid or being lost
  • Dress appropriately – wear shoes you can run in, if necessary
  • Never display valuables such as watches and jewellery in plain sight
  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings – be observant and do not get distracted by a mobile device or displays
  • Stick to well-lit and high volume areas – you should be able to see and be easily seen by others
  • Stay on the pavements and close to the road – avoid dark alleyways and building entryways
  • Avoid taking shortcuts through alleyways, arcades and areas with thick overgrowth or vegetation
  • Keep your cell phone near but do not allow the device to distract you – if you witness any suspicious activity or feel you are under threat, call the police immediately
  • If you are being followed on foot, cross the street and head into a business or an area with other people around
  • Always trust your instincts – if something does not seem right, protect yourself and seek help immediately.
