“The case is a plot to tarnish my name”

Cllr David Mazibuko's case was once again postponed to August 25

The councillor from Peacetown who was arrested on April 30 for allegedly stealing two JoJo tanks appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on July 28. Cllr David Mazibuko’s case was once again postponed to August 25 to give more time to conduct a thorough investigation.

Our reporter conducted an interview with Cllr Mazibuko, who said this case is a plot aimed at tarnishing his name. “In March, the African National Congress (ANC) decided to postpone its provincial and regional conferences in response to Covid-19. Once the numbers of people being infected with Covid-19 go down, the ANC is supposed to host a  conference and we are all in different camps. As it is, we despise each other as ANC comrades. Thus, this case is a plot to tarnish my name. People will recall that in April, I was not arrested alone. As of now, I am the only one left in this theft case. That should tell you that whoever opened this case was out for my blood.”

“I have recordings of Alfred Duma Speaker Cllr Themba Ngubane saying that as the municipality, they have projects meant to assist rural areas in overcoming their water problems. The JoJo tanks were part of those projects and as we all know, I am a councillor in a rural area of Peacetown. Most of the Alfred Duma councillors got the JoJo tanks, as some even took pictures standing next to them. However, they were never arrested nor accused of theft; I am the only councillor who got arrested, with my name plastered all over the news.”

Since his arrest, the angry councillor has opened a case (counter charge) against officials at Alfred Duma Local Municipality and against the National SAPS.

All attempts to get a comment from Alfred Duma Local Municipality with regards to this matter were in vain, as communications manager Mr Siyabonga Maphalala did not respond to emails sent to him.
