Ladysmith KZN: Suspects arrested for policewoman’s murder in Women’s Month

One of the suspects was found in possession of Constable Sikhakhane's firearm

Nine suspects have been arrested following the brutal murder of Constable Thandekile Promise Sikhakhane (35), who was gunned down in Thembalethu Road, Ezakheni B-Section, on Tuesday evening (August 18).

Constable Sikhakhane was on her way to work, dressed in full police uniform, when she offered a lift to two women. While approaching the home of one of the women, her car came under fire from unknown suspects, who robbed and killed her.

Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) police officers from Ezakheni SAPS worked around the clock to bring the murder suspects to book.

A breakthrough was made in the case on Thursday (August 20), as one suspect was arrested and found in possession of Constable Sikhakhane’ s firearm.

Last night (August 21), a further eight suspects aged between 19 and 44 were arrested.

The nine suspects are facing charges of murder, armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker, illegal firearms and six cell-phones were seized from the suspects.

“While these arrests will not bring back our dearly departed member, we at least take comfort that her killers are in custody. The team from Ezakheni is commended for their dedication,” said KZN Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula.
